For RECKONING, Rennie draws upon the significance of recent revolts that have seen statues of colonisers pulled down, and recognition of Indigenous sovereignty declared around the globe.
“The title of the exhibition empowers the ongoing commentary I have through my work about royalty, rights, Original Aboriginal and acknowledgment of true Australian history.” – Reko Rennie
The exhibition includes a new series of Rennie’s iconic colourful paintings that merge hardedge abstraction with camouflage, geometric patterning, graffiti-style text, and diamond-shaped designs inherited from his grandmother.
Two gold-mirrored wall panels and neons featuring the ghosted outline of a warrior figure assert the need to challenge colonial histories, and pay respect to Aboriginal heroines and heroes.
